Wondering whether to start your own candle making business?

By Reys Winklen

Who on earth does not like to do business!? We are all consumers in a way or another, so we have to understand that in life we are all concerned about buying and selling and that too if pecuniary gains are involved.

However while deciding to set up any business, it is not just money that counts but also the personal and dear to heart objectives and expectations that one has towards the future business.

Moreover, in our contemporary society, the internet has made us realize that if you have the passion, you can monetize it instantly. Think about the billions of people online, is there not a handful on thousands of them who share the same passion with you?

Got it, so once you have identified yourself with others who have a similar passion like you, what do you do?

I'll take the example of candle making here, say you are a candle making enthusiast or passionate about candle making but you really didn't have the chance or time to learn about candle making and you decide to monetize your passion, what happens?

As there are thousands of people who share the same passion with you, you first learn the finer points of how to make candles and then contact the other fellows that have the same mindset like you, that is to set up an enterprise to monetize their passion of candle making.

So in this case, you find your market, you probe further into your passion, that is, candle making, then go about learning the tricks of the trade and ultimately setting up a candle making business that juices out cool revenue streams at the end of the month.

There is no boon greater than being able to work in an arena you're passionate about.

So, identify your passion right now, and if you are interested in candle making, then may be it's the ripe time to put your passion to action.

Respect!

Reys Winklen is a candle making enthusiast and helps candle making beginners and people who are passionate about candle making to learn and apply candle making business strategies to set up their very own successful candle making business.

I can understand this idea of 'sell what you are passionate about' but I have doubts that if you turned a passion into a business it would continue to hold the same attraction.

Some of the best selling items are very difficult to get passionate about. Funerals - everybody needs one. Bottled gas - the appliances need it. Horse manure - gardeners need it. Maggots - anglers need them.

To my way of thinking, if you are going to sell something, it is more important that you have a market for it than that you are passionate about it.

Maybe your passion can be turned into a profitable hobby rather than a full blown business?

Just as in any other business, you would need a good business plan before you started, along with adequate market research. You could start this as a part time endeavor with the intent of moving into full time when profits justified it.

I think often it's not a matter of whether a market exists for something so much as finding the market for that something. Sometimes it's among hobbyists and enthusiasts. Sometimes it's not -- part of making a successful business is identifying the unlikely markets for what you create and having the sheer nerve to walk in on them cold.

An example -- a candle maker might be looking at eBay, Etsy, any number of online markets and shipping out all over the country, doing well... and not realize that downtown in their own town only a mile from their house is a gift shop that takes crafts on consignment, or a place specializing in home furnishings that might buy large wholesale lots of very fancy candles because they fit that store's other stock and ambience.

There are markets for almost anything people can create as long as they're competent at doing the craft. It's a matter of finding that market and making the right connections, as well as having some sense of pricing and marketing skills. A good website is almost essential these days even if you build it on a free platform like Blogger.
